![]() Critics object to the activity because they believe it does not encourage the production of creative works, but instead makes money through the inequities and unintended consequences of high statutory damages provisions in copyright laws intended to encourage creation of such works. Both the term and the concept of a copyright troll began to appear in the mid-2000s. It's not worth it, it doesn't look like the copyright trolls are leaving anytime soon, and the legal alternatives should cover most of what you're after.Ī copyright troll is a party (person or company) that enforces copyrights it owns for purposes of making money through litigation, in a manner considered unduly aggressive or opportunistic, generally without producing or licensing the works it owns for paid distribution. This Reddit post from a couple of years ago will probably give you a lot of useful information One of the lawyers was recently accused of misconduct himself, but that seems like a minor thing Some years ago there was a case where police seized a 9-year-old girl's laptop for using pirated MP3s but this was a one-off event and never repeated One man was taken to court over this case, but he had shared his letter on social media and thus basically admitted in public to committing piracy, and was fined €32,000 - but a similar case later on was overturned because the man could prove he didn't possess any pirated material There's also an advice page "What to do if I receive a letter?" by the Pirate Party, here (in Finnish) There is a long discussion (1500 pages so far!) about it here (in Finnish) They don't actually send invoices, in the legal sense of an invoice they are actually asking for payments, but it's voluntary, and just phrased to seem like a bill (usually €600-1500 in scope, depending on the alleged infraction). Then they leverage ISPs for subscribers' details, and send threatening letters on their legal letterheads. Basically they are a variant of the copyright trolls in the USA and Germany, what they do is buy the IP to some TV show or movie, and then track the downloads of it. There's a firm of lawyers who are sending "threat letters" to people. ![]()
